Garden tools make great gifts, and the best time of the year to receive gifts is Christmas! These ergonomic gardening tools are sleek and stylish, making them a great choice for Christmas this year.

Anyone who spends a lot of time in the garden will tell you that over time, it can put some wear and tear on the hands. Part of the reason for this is the constant use of gardening tools. Let’s be honest, not all of them are really that ergonomically sound. Well, here’s a garden gift idea that may shed some light on that topic: an ergonomic gardening set. The set includes a bulb trowel, a weeder, a cultivator, and a regular trowel. These can be purchased as a set for $54.99, or individually for $17.99. Whatever the case, these tools are specially designed to help easy some of the tensions and stress caused on the hands while gardening.

Nasturtium Garden in a Pail

NASTURTIUMPerhaps your better educated than I am (something I willing to concede as probable), but the very first thing I thought when I saw this product was:  “What the heck is a Nasturtium”.  If you knew already, don’t hold it against me.  A quick trip to organicgardentips.com tells me that nasturtium is a flower, it’s a salad ingredient, and it’s used in stir fry.  I was always taught as a child you don’t eat the flowers.  Maybe that was just daisies.

In any case should you have a green thumbed friend who is inclined to eat flowers you would probably make their day with this.  They get a galvanized pail filled with everything they need to grow their own salad, stir fry veggies, or just something nice to look at.   Just add water and give it some sunlight.

The Garden in a Pail  is available from Gardeners Supply Company for $37.95

Cool Patio Furniture and Patio Furniture Accessories

I was just fantasizing about spending more time outdoors in the backyard this summer and starting looking at some patio furniture on the web. I found a couple cool items to help protect your patio furniture set, plus some very nice wood furniture.

Worm Composting: A Great Project for Kids

    worm-bin.gif

If you’re looking for a fun way to get your kids involved in composting, try out a worm-composting bin that uses red wiggler worms. Worm composting (also known as vermicomposting) is a clean, safe, and odor-free way to compost your family’s kitchen scraps. This is way more fun than an ant farm, and better for the environment, too! Worm composting also allows you to compost year round, as you can move the bin inside your garage during the coolest months of winter.

Protect Your Head with a Bahama Hat by Columbia

    sun-hat.jpg

I really dislike wearing sunscreen on my face, so I prefer to wear a wide-brimmed hat when gardening. I also like to wear a light long sleeved shirt but I understand that some of the sun’s rays can still get through.

Anyway, I was looking for some sun hats today and really like the design of this Bahama Hat made by Columbia. It provides for air circulation while protecting your face and neck. It also has a chin strap for windy days.

These kinds of hats generally make me look like a dork when I wear them hiking or walking around. But for gardening, they get a green thumbs up! So the next time some neighborhood punk throws a rock at you for wearing one of these hats, you can tell them, “you won’t be laughing when you get your first skin cancer removed from your neck, sonny boy!”

The hat is available from Cabelas.com, which also has lots of other similar products.

    Costs around $18.00.
